About the speaker: Rev. Lorenza Andrade Smith, now the Pastor of Brownsville United Methodist Church in Brownsville, Texas, served under appointment for four years—and by her own request—to a ministry of presence and advocacy with the homeless. A woman in New York City taught her this lesson: 'God created the world, remember your home is with God. You’re not homeless, you live on the streets.'

About the speaker: Rebecca Moore, Ph.D., is Emerita Professor of Religious Studies at San Diego State University. The author of A Portable God: The Origin of Judaism and Christianity (Rowman and Littlefield 2007), her most recent book is Women in Christian Traditions (New York University Press 2015).
PL 2017.3—Climate Change: The Moral Imperative
Science provides overwhelming evidence that current lifestyle and energy usage will progressively and severely impact human survival and standards of living over the coming century.
Dr. V. "Ram" Ramanathan and panelists will help us become informed about the history and science of climate change and its impact on world populations. The role of skeptics in preventing/delaying political action to mitigate climate change will also be addressed, as will the question of what we can and should be doing as people of faith.

About the speaker: V. "Ram" Ramanathan Ph.D., is a Distinguished Professor of Atmospheric and Climate Sciences at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, UC San Diego. He serves in Pope Francis’ Pontifical Academy of Sciences as council member; in this capacity, In 2014 he helped to convene a global gathering of natural and social scientists for a meeting on sustainability at the Vatican.

According to Rev. Art Cribbs, socially disruptive events taking place today require courageous leadership. The answer to many conflicts is found in the faith traditions and discipline. Leadership based on faith practices and teachings can help resolve personal and global issues. Faith leadership begins with two recognized and repeated biblical instructions: "Fear not!" and "Love one another."

PL 2017.5—UBUNTU
Ubuntu is an ancient worldview which could greatly benefit the Christian church in the 21st century. Ubuntu means "I am because we are." Lynne Westfield will encourage us to focus upon the need for an ethic of community - not simply an individualistic experience of being in a group. The worldview of ubuntu makes no room for hatred, domination or greed - these do not benefit the community.

About the Speaker: Rev. Nancy Lynne Westfield Ph.D., an ordained deacon in The United Methodist Church, has served on the Drew Theological School faculty since 1999. A graduate of Murray State University (Ky.), Scarritt Graduate School (Tenn.), and The Union Institute (Ohio), Dr. Westfield’s teaching and research interests include religious education, womanist studies, imagination, experiential pedagogies, spirituality and mysticism.
